APOSTLE BUILD 2016 - HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
I was built many, many years ago in a much different time. A time when a family consisted of a Father, a Mother, children, grandparents and sometimes a beloved pet all living under the same roof. A time when all families stayed together through the good times, and the not so good times. A time when the entire neighborhood helped raise its children and watched out for their safety. A time when children learned values by the example set by both of their parents. A time of sharing school lunches and outgrown clothing. A time when a man’s word was as good as his bond. A time when everyone went to church to sing and praise the only true living God.
I held many families in my loving walls and saw many tears wiped from young faces and I shared many smiles and laughter on birthdays and anniversaries. I held the cribs of new born babies while they slept and watched as a Mother’s warm good night kiss touched their tender brow. I watched fathers toss and turn in worry their jobs would not be sufficient to care for their growing families and then kept watch as they slept from exhaustion because they took on that part time job to make ends meet. And through it all, I did my very best to bring shelter and comfort to those who dwelt within.
I’ve seen grandchildren spend weekends with their grandparents and I’ve endured slumber parties and watched proudly as young girls prepared for their first dates and watched as young men stole their first kiss. I’ve watched as children and adults played and plowed during the snow of 1950 and saw the building of the Wesleyan Church across the street. And yes, I’ve grieved with families as they’ve gathered after the funeral of a loved one.
But time has taken a toll on my structure and so that 70 North Church Street can once again feel the joy of all the things I’ve know, I must go and make way for a new home to be built. I leave to this new home and its new family the love of God, the joy of family, the commitment to community and the pride of home ownership. To the neighborhood and the community I ask that you welcome the new family and be the good neighbor I know you can be.
Your first duty is to help raise the funds needed to build the new home, then to be part of the construction crew and then to be the welcoming committee on my behalf. Love the new home and its family. This is a great spot in a great community. I am proud to have been part of it for all these years. But now it is time for me to go and so on December 7, 2015 I took my final bow. I wish you Love, Peace and Joy for 2016 and Happiness for the new family you are about to receive.
All my love,
The Old house at 70 North Church Street
